Worth the Waves- A Short Story

                                         Worth the Waves

Three teenagers set off for a day at the beach. It wasn’t their normal sunny and warm day but cloudy, windy, and barely in the 70 degrees. The girls stood there with their tall colorful surfboards looking over the muggy beach horizon.
“Are you sure you want to surf this today? Looks kind of choppy” Angelina said, a short caramel complexion girl with wild curly brown hair looked towards the rolling tides. “Looks like it may even rain.”
“Hell yeah, look at those waves,” replied Star, tall and slender with chocolate skin and dark black hair tied in a bun.
“What’s up with you, Angie, you aren’t afraid of a little cloud are you?” Laughed Staci, a slender brown skinned girl with dirty brown locks down to her butt.
“Of course not, I…” Angelina begins to say.
“Then let’s go!” Staci darts off towards the water with her surfboard.
“Yeaaaaa!” Star shouts running after Star with her board.
“Maybe we should get our wet suits!” Angelina follows after them. The girls dive into the water and get on top of their boards swimming deeper into the ocean floating over small waves. Angelina frantically swims behind Star and Staci who are much more faster swimmers than her. They get to a middle ground where they can wait for waves. Star attaches her leg leash and so do Staci and Angelina.
“I see one!” Staci pointed. “This ones mine!” Staci paddles on her stomach to an on coming wave forming. She gets in position as the mediocre wave forms rapidly and she hops on the board to her feet balancing with perfect precision. She glides on the wave as the other girls cheer her on.
“Yes! That was a good one!” Staci yells back at the girls as she comes to the end of the wave waiting towards the shore.
“There’s one coming, you can take that one, Angie,” Star points to a part of the water that had waves developing.
“No, you take it,” Angelina insisted.
“Okay then,” Star scurries to follow the waters rhythm. She also glides along another mediocre wave focused until she comes to the end where Staci is still waiting on her board.
The waves are becoming a bit larger now and Angelina can feel the water changing under her feet.
“Come on Angie! They’re perfect!” Staci yells out to her.
Angelina paddles and cuts through a few waves to prevent them from taking her back to shore. The water is getting colder and her arms are feeling the change. She struggles to find a good wave.
“That one!” Star yells out. Angelina hears them but is more focused on keeping her body from getting colder. She looks up at the sky and sees the clouds getting a bit darker.
“Hurry!” Star yells again. Angelina centers back on paddling and sees another wave she can get. She paddles harder, arms freezing and hops on her two feet, legs shivering. She somehow gets her balance and connects with the wave. She smiles a nervous relief and rides the wave not realizing the wave is growing larger behind her.
“Oh shit!” Star yells out. “Ride girl ride!”  Angelina doesn’t look back at the wave but keeps her gaze forward.  She feels a hard gust of wind on the back of her neck and water splashing harder on her back and neck. She looks behind her at a gigantic wave crashing one by one right on her heels. Her eyes widen, heart beats faster, and legs tense. She can hear the girls yelling but can’t make out what they are saying. She faces back forward and started to feel like she had been riding for eternity. Her knees wobble and the cold wind stiffens her body. All in an instant thought she wants to let go and ride the wave on her stomach but if she knew if she made any sudden moves it could take her out fast. She could see the girls now as their jaws dropped and started paddling away from her. She looked behind her again as the wave suddenly took her.
She flew off the board and crashed backside into the water snatching her ankle leash off. She twirled and twirled under the water holding her breath and folding her arms to her chest. She felt something scrape the side of her foot, then her thigh, and her stomach. She yelled out in pain but ended up sucking in water as the wave died down pushing her towards the shore.
“Angelina!!!!” Star paddled towards the shore.
“Angiiiiieee!” Staci also paddled after her. The clouds have now become a full dark grey and thunder began to roar. Angelina lay flat on her stomach like a dead fish, eyes closed. The girls finally make it to shore and run to Angelina’s side flipping her over on her back. Staci looks back out at the water for Angelina’s board but doesn’t see it. Star slaps Angelina’s face and puts her ear to her mouth.
“Oh fuck, she isn’t breathing,” Star cried out beginning CPR.
“Come on Angie!” Staci grabs Angelina’s freezing hands squeezing them. “Wake up! Wake up!”
Star continues to press on Angelina’s chest and checks her breathing again.
“She’s breathing, she’s breathing!” Star yells and continues CPR on her.
“Come on Come on!” Staci starts slapping Angelina’s face.
“You guys okay!” A guy surfer and his friend in shorts run over towards the girls. Angelina spits up a ton of water coughing and gagging.
“Oh shit! Thank you, God!” Star falls back. Staci grabs Angelina hugging her. “You’re my only sister! I would die if I lost you!” she began crying. The two white boys catch up to the girls.
“Dude, that was amazing!” one blonde and brown eyed boy spoke up.
“Is she okay?” the other blonde and blue eyed boy asked.
“Yea, I think so,” Angelina replied struggling to rest on her elbows.
“We caught all that on camera, dude. I’m Tony and this is Braxton,” the blonde haired guy introduced himself handing his phone to Staci to see the footage he caught.
“That was like a 10 foot wave, dude, we thought you were gonna bail!” said Braxton.
The girls watched the video as Angelina was toughing out this monster wave.
“Oh my God,” Angelina covered her mouth.
“You’re a beast dude that was a total blow out wave with this weather!” Tony added. “You should join our surf team man!” Braxton added.
“But she almost died!” Staci said. Angelina smiled wildly at the camera as she fought the ferocious wave with the large clouds and rolling thunder. Her and the wave; that could barely keep up with her. She cringed when she saw the wave take her down and looked back out into the water still splashing and growling.
“So worth it.” Angelina grinned.
And this was the beginning of a new adventure for Angelina.

                                                                     THE END

Ride Your Wave

We all have waves in our life that we aren’t sure we can take on. There are even waves in our life that are unexpected. There are even waves that almost kill us. But once we come to the end of that wave and back in stable waters, we end up looking back and smiling and asking ourselves, was it worth it. And it usually is. So embrace your waves, get through them. Ride them. And prepare for another.
